Following a well-received one-off Balint session provided for a small group of final year medical students, the Department of General Practice and Primary Health Care at the University of Auckland has been offering a Balint group session for all final year medical students. These sessions have been led by two academic staff members; one, a counsellor, and the other, a general practitioner who is also a barrister. The usual form of a Balint group session is conducted however, when the possibility for a teaching opportunity appears, the session “moves” into teaching mode and then back into the traditional Balint format. This approach has meant that teaching opportunities, including participation in role plays as appropriate, are not lost and can occur “in the moment” as issues surface within the group. This presentation will describe the process followed as well as presenting the results of a survey completed by all participants.
