Singing for Health (385)
A session to explore and
experience the many health benefits of group singing for individuals and
communities. Jane Thompson and Fay White will share three decades
of experience facilitating singing in health, educational, community and conference
settings. They will present an overview of research on the health and
developmental benefits that group singing offers. Evidence shows that singing
can raise levels of immunoglobulin A, increase aerobic fitness, stimulate the
circulatory system and increase serotonin levels (as long as you are enjoying
the experience), and it can relieve pain. Singing can calm anxiety
and provide a lift of mood or cathartic outlet to enhance mental-emotional
well-being, and it has significant impacts on brain development. Social benefits
are well documented as people who sing together move out of isolation and find
a community voice, breaking down fears, suspicion and prejudice. Although
these things will be discussed, the session will be mainly interactive as we
sing to experience the pleasure and mood lift that follows when singing is
facilitated in a criticism-free environment. Fay and Jane will ease
you into singing - and enjoying it - within minutes! No musical experience
is required and nor any ability to read music, as all songs are taught as
we go, 'by ear'." Participants who do not wish to sing are
also very welcome.
